A movie that we run on Star Ray TV comes to mind: A Star is Born (1937) starring Janet Gaynor and Fredric March. In this movie a small-town girl is ridiculed by her family for having dreams of Hollywood stardom. Against all odds she goes to Hollywood and becomes a big star. This movie has been around before "mass media's infiltration into all aspects of our lives." In 1937 there was no Internet and no TV just radio and theaters.

The Search for a Way In

Star Ray TV, Canada's first and only "low power" TV station, was the brainchild of Jan Pachul. Located in a rundown strip mall in east-end Toronto, the TV station was run on abandoned UHF channels (remember the upper dial you desperately spun in the hopes of turning grey static shadow into Batman or Rocket Robin Hood?). But Pachul couldn't keep Star Ray TV on the air. He soon ran out steam and cash. In a cluttered office illuminated by a single lamp, he spews conspiracy theories and vague programming ideas. He cites his planned monster-movie daily "Creature Feature" as an example of innovative television, and badmouths the "assholes" in Ottawa. Pachul started Star Ray because he had worked his whole life in various aspects of the TV industry and, after contemplating the offerings of Canadian television, became convinced "he could do a better job." He drags his hand through his unkempt hair. "I didn't want to be an activist," he says, "I just wanted to run a TV station."

Pachul couldn't think of a single reason why he shouldn't have his own TV station. The Main-Gerrard Co-op would take great issue with Hal Niedzviecki's description of our building as a "rundown strip mall." The Co-op regularly spends hundreds of thousands of dollars a year on maintenance. They are one of the best landlords in the city.

What license from the Department of Heritage? The Department of Heritage doesn't give out any licenses. We had and still do have an experimental license from Industry Canada. I am also a licensed amatuer radio operator.

Niedzviecki makes it up while he goes along claiming the CRTC "turned down a request for the license to be renewed." There was no license to renew. In fact the CRTC declined our low- power UHF license application after they invited us to apply AFTER they had previously in 1998 turned us down for an exemption from the [i]Broadcast Act[/i].

The CRTC never backed off as Niedzviecki claims. We went to a CRTC Kangaroo court at which I was found to be broadcasting in contravention of CRTC dictates. We again filed an application under the CRTC's new low-power community TV policy and then new CRTC bullshit started. Read this website and you will know the true story.

Why do we have several websites and are a worldwide leader in Internet broadcasting? Why are we building a new broadcast center?

Hey Niedzviecki, you have no connection to reality: what do you call Star Ray TV's [i] Mission Statement[/i] or [i]Viewer's Bill of Rights[/i] or all the people that wrote on behalf of Star Ray TV to the CRTC? How come we've been in the same location for 12 years with "no real connection to the community?"

Hal Niedzviecki is classic disinformation artist who throws out a few facts and uses these facts to weave his twisted fiction to support his bogus theories. I wonder about the other people in his book. To the other subjects in this book, has the same shit happened to you? Did this Niedzviecki character come up with bullshit stories about you to fit his "everyone is a loser" theory? Let us know.

My own theory is that the real loser is Hal Niedzviecki who has these delusions that he is a writer and a deep thinker. His book is poorly written with many grammatical errors. Maybe next time Niedzviecki writes a book he should learn something about sentence structure. I guess it did require some thought to come up with the fiction he wrote. This Dickhead should read his own book. He thinks he is a "cultural critic" and [b]SPECIAL[/b] enough to be an author and write a book. Individuals DO matter, you must have the hope of a better tomorrow, if you never try, how are you going to know if you can suceed? Always do your best, don't think you can't make it, maybe you can. It's better to fail than not try at all. In my case I was hitting 40 years old when I got the TV station idea and I didn't want any regrets when I got older. I actually know how to run a television station, and I thought; Why not? I'm 54 now and guess what? I don't have any regrets.
