Re: Interference Problems
The original idea was to have local owners of a Star Ray TV franchise. The flagship station would provide "network" programming with local shows produced by the local community.

As far as a rebroadcaster of our present station, we would have trouble coming up with the needed investment for a second digital transmitter plus the monthly reoccuring costs of the operation. ATSC broadcasting does not have a market penetration high enough to support such an endeavour.

Maybe you want to start up a Mississauga station?

Re: Interference Problems
Have you ever thought about setting up a 2nd transmitter in Mississauga? If channel 30 is open why not setup in Mississauga on channel 30 ?

Re: Interference Problems
The tower antenna up ninety feet with a 25 db amplifier pointed at Buffalo is showing a hash pattern with clean audio. The interference is a lot less than we got from WBNF 15 when they were broadcasting in analog. I didn't notice any interference at ground level while I was watching Star Ray in my apartment two blocks away.

Re: Interference Problems
As of minutes ago CHCH went to full power on 15, how is it affecting your situation?? Just curious?

Re: Interference Problems
The plan has been to move to channel 22. Industry Canada has stated they still consider valid the developmental license (VX9AMK) we received in 1997. That license is for UHF channel 15 and 22. We also went through all the hoops TWICE for UHF channel 15 broadcast certificates when we applied for CRTC licenses. Unfortunately last time due to CRTC fraud and breech of trust we never received a hearing.

Channel 30 is a vacant allocation for Toronto. I really don't think UHF 30 would work better for us than UHF 22. Our East bound signal won't go much past Kennedy Road in Scarborough due to our ground and tower height. As a result we do not have any interference issues coming or going with CHEX in Oshawa. As an added bonus UHF channel 22 was a Class C full power station (Global) for many years and has grandfathering similar to the old CHCH 11 frequency.

I noticed mild interference right away today from the tower antenna when CHCH went on 15. I called a few viewers and nobody could pick up CHCH 15 or notice the interference.

We will go off UHF 15 when we notice objectionable interference. Ironically I just picked up our new digital transmitter today and when I got back I noticed the interference. We can’t stay off the air for long because we don’t want to lose our spot on the Eutelsat satellite.

With all the interference issues CHCH are fools for converting to channel 15 but better they make stupid moves than us.

Re: Interference Problems
Under the current FCC / Industry Canada agreement, American Class A stations are NOT protected from interference from Canadian full-power stations. They are only protected from American stations.

The interference to WUTV on channel 14 is much better than it would be under the already agreed to post-transition parameters for channel 15, which is 493 kW.

Now that CHCH-DT is testing on channel 15, will Star Ray move to digital on 30?

Re: Interference Problems
CHCH does not have FCC approval for the use of channel 15. I just looked up CHCH in the FCC database and it's NOT there. WBNF-DT channel 15 and WUTV channel 14 are definitely on the air at Grand Island, New York. Looks like the FCC deemed their application as unacceptable.

CHCH does have CRTC and Industry Canada approval! IF CHCH goes on UHF channel 15, they will screw up the reception of at least 5 stations: their own station CHCH, WUTV, WBNF-DT, WEWS, and of course Star Ray TV.

I don't know what the FCC will do in a case like this.

Re: Interference Problems
Curious, so what's the true story. CHCH says they are approved for ch-15 by the FCC 2 posts above, and you are saying their application is rejected by the FCC. Which is correct?? I can't find anything.

My response to CHCH-TV and the CRTC
What do I think of this? UHF channel 15 is a very noisy frequency. We got to use channel 15 because Industry Canada considered it a "junker" frequency. CHCH is actually degrading their signal by going to UHF 15.

As predicted, CHCH's UHF channel 15 application has not been accepted by the FCC. A CHCH channel 15 interferes on US soil with WBNF channel 15 and WUTV channel 14 at Grand Island New York. A search of the FCC database shows no application nor file number for CHCH UHF 15 but does show an award of a Class A license for WBNF channel 15 at 15KW dated January 12, 2012. I repeat, WBNF is NOT moving off channel 15, they now have a full license! TCT the owners of WBNF have stated they object to CHCH's application and that the FCC will never approve it. Both US stations have "protected" status. By comparison, CHCJ-DT channel 35 Hamilton (recently awarded to CTV for a CHVR translator) shows up in the FCC database as "granted."

As far as the FCC approving 493,000 watts on UHF RF 15 at Hamilton, by granting WBNF's and WUTV's applications the FCC has limited RF 15 at Hamilton to Sun TV's former power and height of 9100 watts and 150 meters. There is no new interference on VHF channel 11, I don't buy CHCH's argument that 6100 watts is all that Industry Canada and the FCC will allow.

As I stated before, we also received temporary authority for UHF RF22 the same time we received temporary authority for RF15. At the time we did not use UHF 22 due to objectionable interference from UHF 23 analog, Buffalo. Since then channel 23 has moved to Batavia with much lower power. Now UHF 22 is a much cleaner frequency than 15. We haven't decided when we are going to switch or whether we will come back in analog or digital.

The CRTC has been sitting on our second application since June 2004 and now they're giving away our long time frequency for which we received two broadcasting certificates from Industry Canada. CHCH has how many transmitters for their amateurish channel and we're not even allowed to have one? Three words describe the CRTC: corruption, corruption, corruption.

Hijacking our viewers and interfering with US channels won't help CHCH much. They aptly named their company: Channel Zero. That's because they ARE a zero!
