Post Re: Interference Problems
CHCH does not have FCC approval for the use of channel 15. I just looked up CHCH in the FCC database and it's NOT there. WBNF-DT channel 15 and WUTV channel 14 are definitely on the air at Grand Island, New York. Looks like the FCC deemed their application as unacceptable.

CHCH does have CRTC and Industry Canada approval! IF CHCH goes on UHF channel 15, they will screw up the reception of at least 5 stations: their own station CHCH, WUTV, WBNF-DT, WEWS, and of course Star Ray TV.

I don't know what the FCC will do in a case like this.

Under the current FCC / Industry Canada agreement, American Class A stations are NOT protected from interference from Canadian full-power stations. They are only protected from American stations.

The interference to WUTV on channel 14 is much better than it would be under the already agreed to post-transition parameters for channel 15, which is 493 kW.

Now that CHCH-DT is testing on channel 15, will Star Ray move to digital on 30?

The plan has been to move to channel 22. Industry Canada has stated they still consider valid the developmental license (VX9AMK) we received in 1997. That license is for UHF channel 15 and 22. We also went through all the hoops TWICE for UHF channel 15 broadcast certificates when we applied for CRTC licenses. Unfortunately last time due to CRTC fraud and breech of trust we never received a hearing.

Channel 30 is a vacant allocation for Toronto. I really don't think UHF 30 would work better for us than UHF 22. Our East bound signal won't go much past Kennedy Road in Scarborough due to our ground and tower height. As a result we do not have any interference issues coming or going with CHEX in Oshawa. As an added bonus UHF channel 22 was a Class C full power station (Global) for many years and has grandfathering similar to the old CHCH 11 frequency.

I noticed mild interference right away today from the tower antenna when CHCH went on 15. I called a few viewers and nobody could pick up CHCH 15 or notice the interference.

We will go off UHF 15 when we notice objectionable interference. Ironically I just picked up our new digital transmitter today and when I got back I noticed the interference. We can’t stay off the air for long because we don’t want to lose our spot on the Eutelsat satellite.

With all the interference issues CHCH are fools for converting to channel 15 but better they make stupid moves than us.

The tower antenna up ninety feet with a 25 db amplifier pointed at Buffalo is showing a hash pattern with clean audio. The interference is a lot less than we got from WBNF 15 when they were broadcasting in analog. I didn't notice any interference at ground level while I was watching Star Ray in my apartment two blocks away.

Have you ever thought about setting up a 2nd transmitter in Mississauga? If channel 30 is open why not setup in Mississauga on channel 30 ?

The original idea was to have local owners of a Star Ray TV franchise. The flagship station would provide "network" programming with local shows produced by the local community.

As far as a rebroadcaster of our present station, we would have trouble coming up with the needed investment for a second digital transmitter plus the monthly reoccuring costs of the operation. ATSC broadcasting does not have a market penetration high enough to support such an endeavour.

Maybe you want to start up a Mississauga station?
